Remembrance of time Origin of Frogetting
Remembrance of time Origin of forgetting is a site-specific project made for New Music Festival at McNeill Street Pumping Station[1] in Louisiana by Morehshin Allahyari[2] and Andrew Blanton[3].
All sounds for this work were created by Andrew Blanton with a process of using site-specific recordings in conjunction with custom built synthesizers. The visuals for the work were created by Morehshin Allahyari with Andrew Blanton using Autodesk Maya. The visuals are created from a combination of abstract sculptures and objects modeled from the site of the McNeil Street Pumping Station.
Urban decay and renewal are one and the same thing. As the buildings that man has created crumble, nature flourishes in the wake. With the decommissioning of the pumping station, a new site for artistic inquiry has been created. "Remembrance of time; Origin of forgetting" is a site-specific installation by Morehshin Allahyari and Andrew Blanton that exists between real and imagined, memory and re-creation of the factory as a dream; an alternate reality seen through the exterior windows of the pumping station. Through combing the digital with the physical, the past with the present, the decay with the renewal, the installation explores the displacement of a industrial facility with it's intended use. Memory is re-collection, re-presentation, and re-arrangement of events, actions and places; history is a simulacrum of itself.
